The Xbox 360 is almost upon us (and OMGZ! its a hole 357 beter dan da ps3), and so now might be the time to discuss which games of the current generation you feel are the best. Yes, I know there's still one or two notable upcoming releases across the big three (Zelda: Twilight Princess on GameCube; Shoot the Pakis 3 on Xbox; Eyetoy: Pattacake on PS2), but this generation is pretty much spent.
Let's use this space to suggest nominations for the best game of this generation of consoles. The most popular suggestions will be entered into a poll, perhaps?

Resident evil 4, innit.
I still haven't got anywhere on it, actually, but I can tell class when I see it.
Also, metroid prime. That was boss.
For the xbox I suppose you'd have to say halo 1&2, shite though they were. Don't know many xbox games meself though.
Pro evo?
I dunno.

My suggestions:
-------------------------
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Xbox) An unpatronising, enormous, evolving game that trusted the player with its narrative and, unlike almost any other game which afforded its audience a degree of freedom, didn't judge the player on hir treatment of morals and ethics. Deeply flawed in many senses, but ultimately highly rewarding and involved a great amount of imagination and gaming literacy compared to similar games such as the sugarcoated Fable.
-------------------------
Beyond Good and Evil (GC/PS2/Xbox) An intelligent game that managed to seamlessly merge action, puzzles, stealth and narrative. Although influenced by Zelda's dungeons in many ways, this game refused to fall into the trap of turning everything into a battle, instead offering gamers rewards for nature photography. The ultimate goal of destroying a repressive totalitarian state and granting freedom to the repressed masses was a great relief after the slew of "f**k the people" games made in the wake of Grand Theft Auto's success.
-------------------------
Eternal Darkness (GC) This is a choice that might surprise some people who know me, since I couldn't get into this game at all, but it certainly deserves an honourable mention due to its treatment of narrative. Despite the game driving its own linear narrative, the subtle manner in which the gamer is given control over the events of the flashback allows the story to develop without having to dictate to its audience. Try it yourself: think about the plot and what happens in this game, then think about how much you were involved in the events - a great comparison to cutscene driven games such as GTA or MGS, and the greatest game narrative development of this generation.
-------------------------
Halo (Xbox) A strange choice, perhaps, given that it's been both criticised and loved by random cross-sections of both the hardcore and casual gamers. It certainly rewards the games-literate, however. Like an arthouse film, it's thoughtful, individual, and not afraid to play with the conventions of its own genre. This said, I would agree that as a gaming experience it can be an acquired taste. The sequel removed everything I loved from the original, even the protagonist's detracted personality and (again!) wild narrative growth.

Yours can involve less words than mine, it's allowed.

General consensus is that GTA is one of the best games of the generation (if not, THE best game) then? That's tolerable. It's just a shame that the more ambitious the GTA games get, the less fun they are. I'm still certain they've got another classic in them, although reliable people have suggested that it isn't going to be Liberty City Stories.

oh its very good compared to the latest one (fatel shadows), there is so much satisfaction to sit on a roof waiting for the guard to turn his back then drop out of the rafters and slit his throat and if ur lucky cut his head off i don't like the latest one though becasue it dosn't feature Rikmaru best character in my opinion. though teshu does come close i mean who else could rip someones heart out with his bare hands and break peoples necks instanly (pluss hes a doctor by day and a hit man by night lol)

I nominate:
Halo (first FPS to make me actually complete it), F-Zero GX (racing games can't get much better), Super Monkey Ball (apes... in balls!), Tales of Symphonia (which I'm playing through now and is the first traditional RPG that's got me hooked since Skies of Arcadia), Armed and Dangerous (not brilliant but damn fun), and Chu Chu Rocket (The Dreamcast is 128bit so I guess it counts, CCR was damn good in multiplayer. A sequel is needed now).

super monkey ball SHOULD be a good contender, but probably won't be, because it's a puzzle game and people like myself keep on buying the same recycled FPS garbage over and over again.
Did I say buying? I meant stealing, but you get my point.
Super smash bros melee is a pure gaming experience too. Not that flashy, not that many great ideas, but as addictive as crack, and at least as much fun to get your friends hooked on.

My PS2 is nearly four years old. It only seems to play older game titles. Gran Turismo 4 refused to work on it. GTA San Andreas was the last new title I'd had no problems with whatsover. (Taito Legends works fine though). The only DVD's it plays at the moment seem to be the free ones you get with newspapers. The guy down the market refuses to deal in pre owned PS2's. I'm tempted to wait till the XBox 360 comes out, then get a pre owned XBox that's been traded in, as they seem far more reliable.

haha, Xbox, reliable? Mine doesn't play any games released over a year after its launch. I've replaced the laser in the DVD drive, which granted it another month's worth of life, but it's now just a big, ugly ornament on my shelf. This is why I'm not buying an Xbox 360, and certainly not at launch - I don't want to get lumbered with another machine that doesn't work once the warranty works out.
To think, my reward for getting an Xbox at launch is owning a significantly inferior console to those that my friends have bought in the past couple of years. Thanks Microsoft, I'll be sure to show you my support again.

You can get a pre owned Xbox at the moment with 3 months guarantee for 70 quid from Game.
A bit steep methinks, they also have pre owned PS2's at 60 quid.
Incidentally top stalking game on PS2 has to be Manhunt. Hiding in the shadows of derelict buildings waiting for lone gang members to walk by, then finishing em off with a plastic bag, top gaming.
