For some reason in terms of a series... it would have to be Haibane Renmai... as it just seemed to have stayed with me a lot longer then other animes I have watched over the last year.
As for films... I made it my mini mission to watch as much Ghibli stuff as possible, and what has resonated with me the most was Laputa (which I think was the first Miyazaki film I saw a few years ago), Spirited Away (I just love the train sequence and the mysterious ghost girl on the platform), Nausicaa (I think its the music...) and Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies and especially Only Yesterday (which for some reason has become a personal favourite of mine).
Your turn!

Depends what do you define great as? Also,do you mean movies or series
Personally, the last great anime movie I watched was Spirited away. Everyone knows why, it is just that damn good.
The best series is either Cowboy Bebop (very noir), Love hina (humour and storyline, sorta relates to my quest to get into uni) and Excel Saga (just insane! NABESHIN!!!!)

Excel Saga YES!! does Puni Puni Peomi count as great? It's ok. It's not as good as Excel saga though, as it doesn't have Pedro or THAT MAN in it

I suppose the last really famous one I saw was "Howl's Moving Castle."
The last anime I actually watched was Dominion Tank Police, which fooking rawks, although my all time favourite anime is Giant Robo. <3
I've also recently acquired over 300 episodes of the pokemon anime, because I'm such a fangirl. ^______^ *is bricked*

Other animes you should never admit to watching, but I have in the past was... Yu Gi Oh... luckily I stopped... but only because it got stupid... *cough* and Nickolodean only showed repeats over and over again. Did anyone use to watch Blue Gender and Martian Successor Nedesico on Sci-Fi? I enjoyed those, especially Nedesico.

Porco Rosso is well good, and I've also been watching a few old X-men cartoons (one of which was the basis for the "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!" thing). I know it's not technically anime, but it's a cartoon, and the best one from my childhood, methinks.

I've always thought of it as a less political X-Men varient with better fight scenes. Did you know Jean Reno does the voice in Porco Rosso... or was that just in the French version...

It's Michael Keaton in the English version. But I did not know that, thank you. It's good how they're getting proper actors to do voices these days.

I rate the fairly recently released SteamBoy rather highly, but Spirited Away is the most recent undeniable classic. Howl's Moving Castle was very good but I don't think the animation was anything special. I used to love Space Adventure Cobra which still hasn't been released on DVD and I don't own a VCR to even watch my copy of it.
Glad to hear a few mentions of Porco Rosso as It has been sat on the desk awaiting viewing for ages now.

I really liked it the series as it was funny at times, and also had the amazing Gekiganger 3 in it! The movie wasn't very good, it was a lot darker and just didn't feel Nadesico.

Also Perfect Blue is high on my list and (controversially) Uotsukidoji: The Legend of the Overfiend
