You could say it's his own fault for being a chronic alcoholic, yet it's still a shame that this footballing legend passed away after severe illness at 12:55 today.
RIP

Ah well, i guess it was gonna happen sooner or later, the media gathering round the hospital like vultures was a little distasteful though.

Ah well, i guess it was gonna happen sooner or later, the media gathering round the hospital like vultures was a little distasteful though. George Best WAS a living legend. He was in his prime, the best player in Europe. And I agree with DJ, the news media are now vultures. Unfortunately since Diana died we are now a nation of professional mourners. Anyone who remembers the newspapers after her accident will recall seeing about 90% Diana and 10% other news for days afterwards.

Richard Burns (2001 WRC) has also died. Dropping like flies they are. As for George Best, I'm no fan of football (apart from actually playing the sport) so it doesn't really affect me that much, and the only opinion I can hold on it, was that it was his own fault really. And it's a good example not to let these 24 hour pub opening times go ahead.

People say it's his own fault, but he never blamed it on anybody else. (This point stolen from my dad.)

Also, another point stolen from someone else ( ) I heard that "alcoholism" is a disease, and once you're in, it's hard to get out...

Life's a disease. Get over it. He who has used the most livers by the time he dies is the winner.

Richard Burns (2001 WRC) has also died. Dropping like flies they are I was very sad to hear that as he was only 34 and i met him a few years ago when i attended the Rally Great Britain (must have been 1997-99 i did the event). He seemed a genuinely nice bloke too.

This weekend was a sad weekend for the world of sport. First George Best then Richard Burns. I saw a makeshift shrine in front of the Christmas tree at the Belfast City Hall on Saturday. It had shirts and scarfs from every club. Northern Ireland, Chelsea, Manchester Utd, Rangers, Glentoran (local club, I don't know how its spelt). A fitting tribute to a local hero.
My salute to Richard Burns as well. I celebrated as he one the World Championship in 2001. I prayed for him to come back after he fainted at Wales Rally GB in 2003 as a result of a brain tumor. Sadly he never recovered. Rest in peace, guys.

Ayrton Senna will no doubt be taught how to drive a rally car by Burnsy too and god help the footballers who try and take on Mr Best. Farewell guys, you truly were the best at what you did.

i think it was his own fault. he got a transplant and wasted it. it could've gone to someone who would've appreciated it. a waste if you look at it in those terms.
that aside i can't help but think that the only reason the media overhyped his death was cos they don't want people to have a negative image of drinking.
instead of a miserable failure who died a horrible death they portray him like he was some kind of hero. i'm sorry but even if he was 10 times better i don't think you become a hero from playing football.
