The american version of the ring is about as scary as being attacked by a goldfish.

Yeah? and? I watched Dawn of the dead the other week with my g/f....she laughed all the way through it whilst I nervously sat there with my pillow ready to cover my face.
I HATE SCARY FILMS!

here's some advice, if you don't watch the gory violence you'll never be de-sensitised to it therefore i suggest you watch Starship troopers 2 where you get to see the soldiers brain goo slide out of their heads

I've got Ichi the killer occupying space on my desktop right now, but I can't bring myself to watch it. Not because I'm afraid of teh gore, but because I've heard that it is disappointing.

Ichi the killer…. Awesome!!!! The sliced face sliding down the wall is pure genius.
If you like Miyazaki watch Castle in the Sky, great film and partly set in Wales. I tell you no lie.

but...aside from the claret, is it a good film? How does it stack up to, say, OldBoy?

Its one of the most visually inventive films I’ve seen in a while, the violence is a bit over the top in more of a manga than live action way but I’ve not seen OldBoy yet so I couldn’t say if it stands up to it. It not a film you can easily forget watching put it that way.
