Lately as some of you know i've been getting into Japanese and Chinese/Hong Kong Films. I've so far discovered some excellent movies that are really well worth seeing if you get the chance to track them down on DVD....
1. Battle Royale --------------------- I'm a huge fan of this schoolkid murder-fest and it is one of the highest profile Japanese films i know of
2. Returner --------------------- Made in 2002, this japanese tale involves a girl who travels back in time from 2084 where the world is on it's knees from alien invasion and her mission is to kill the very first alien (or Daggra as it is called which is Tibetan for Enemy) and therefore change history. The excellent special effects, fight scenes and plot twists make this one film that should not be missed,
3. So Close --------------------- This film was also made in 2002 but is from Hong Kong instead of Japan. This one is about two sisters who control a satellite which enables them to access every CCTV system in the world. They use it though for the purpose of assasination missions for which they do for money. Unfortunately for them though there is now a female cop on their trail and also the people who they did a job for are ready to rub them out by any means necessary. This film involves shootouts, matrix-style gunplay and fight scenes plus there is an unbelieveably amazing samurai sword fight towards the end. A true forgotten classic this is.
4. Hard Boiled --------------------- Another Hong Kong film. This was directed by John (Face/Off) Woo and was made in 1992 which was well before his hollywood debut. This picture still shows his love of birds and twin guns because there is a massive shootout in a hospital towards the end where all hell breaks loose. An action classic
5. Shiri ----------- Bought this one today, it's an excellent Korean film which again involves an assassin and two agents who try and hunt her down

Mmm... Battle Royale. That film coasts the thin ice between sh*t and fantastic. For a septuagenarian, Kinji Fukasaku does well to create a fairly balanced view of youth in a fairly unbalanced setting. Also, there are explosions.
The sequel stars the delightful Shugo Oshinari, the man I'm going to marry, and yet still manages to be awful. The opening scene of some anonymous twin towers being blown up by terrorists is almost worth watching the rest of the film for though.
Edit: Removed a comma. I'm really anal.

Saw Ring 2 round a mates house the other day. Quality.
Can anyone tell me the name of that Japanese film that Tarantino got a few ideas off for Resevoir Dogs.
It was on telly quite a while ago.
I remember seeing a programme where a film critic showed scenes from this Jap film then near identical scenes in resevoir dogs.
I keeping thinking it had the word street in the title but am probabaly wrong.

I remember watching this weird Japanese film, it was shot in black & white. It was about a man who started turning into metal. There was one scene I can recall where he sprouted exhaust pipes from his feet for turbo speed. I can't remember the name of it but it was well weird.

I asked matey down at the local Choices, he reckons from my description its Tetsuo Iron Man. Just looked on Google and he was right. They made a sequel called Tetsuo2: Body Hammer. Made in late eighties.

I've been thinking of seeing that film for a while. For some reason I kept thinking it was an Asian Charlie's Angels.

Princess Mononoke is ok, though it is quite weird as far as feature length anime's go. Akira is good, you should look at that.
