www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/shownews.php?id=7396Matt will certainly be pleased. Looks like we are gearing up for a nice HDTV rollout, just as well really as the XB2 is suposed to output all its games in 720p or 1080i as default, and I expect Sony and Nintendo will have good HDTV support as well (Their consoles are due in 2006 and will certainly be powerfull enough the XB2 due late 2005, will be the runt of the three this time, whereas the PS2 is the runt of the current litter) Although I am a bit annoyed as I have just upgraded my TV and I doubt I can justify to Sarah why we need to upgrade again so soon

It's still digital but looks loads better thanks to some proper screen resolution - similar to what we have had on PC monitors for years really.
It just means consoles can really start progressing above the constraints of a 640 x 480 resolution. TV broadcasts will see similar improvements. It also means that we might start seeing RTS's again on consoles. The whole genre has been hampered by TV's limited res.
If you wanna see some high res video then download the Terminator 2 Trailer and compare it to the DVD release. Should be able to get it easily with google. (think it's on the MS website as well since they wanna show off Media Players abilities) Shame high-res DVD only runs on PC's at the moment.
Having said that I got Spiderman 2: Superbit Edition on DVD from America (not released in UK) and it's a gobsmackingly good picture compared to regular discs.
Glad I didn't get a new TV over Christmas now.

Requirements for the label “HD ready”<br>A display device has to cover the following requirements to be awarded the label "HD ready":
1. Display, display engine - The minimum native resolution of the display (e.g. LCD, PDP) or display engine (e.g. DLP) is 720 physical lines in wide aspect ratio.
2. Video Interfaces * The display device accepts HD input via: Analogue YPbPr1; and DVI or HDMI
* HD capable inputs accept the following HD video formats: 1280x720 @ 50 and 60Hz progressive ("720p"), and 1920x1080 @ 50 and 60Hz interlaced ("1080i")
* The DVI or HDMI input supports content protection (HDCP)."
The good news is that a lot of freeview settop boxes can already output in 720p (at least that is what I have been told) they will only need a software upgrade (usualy done on the menu screen while on a BBC channel) and the BBC has stated its plans to change to HD and standard digital signals(for owners of a non HDTV set) when the analog signals are turned off (all the freeview channels and the radio stations fit into roughly 3/4's the bandwith required for 1 analog channel and the digital channels are already higher quality than analog. Plus the fact that the wasted areas in between channels that are curently very big will be non exsistant in a digital signal as it will not need them to seperate the channels).

Can't see it either. Is it me, or does anyone find it funny that this "new technology" has been around for donkey's years, it's just that they never applied it to TVs before

I only wish HDTV wasn't so expensive. It sucks that I have to pay heaps if I want HDTV. Still, DVD is good enough for me for now.
