...my PC, what order would you recommend I do so, here is my spec:
Athlon XP 2500+ (to athlon 64 bit - my mobo is ASUS A7V8X-X would that support athlon 64?) 128mb Radeon 9200SE 512mb RAM (used a lot, I would like more) ATX Case with either 300 or 350watt PSU
The rest I do not need/do not want to upgrade.

you don't need to upgrade, stop complaining 512 ram is plenty, only ridiculously absurd people have 1024 your graphics memory is double mine alone and its a radeon which is one of the bes makes I don't know why you want to upgrade your power supply? what to exactly? it's only supposed to be adequate to power the damn thing and make sure the fan is working so it doesn't overheat. WHY???

The processor is okay and the ASUS a7V8X-X will not support the athlon 64.You have socket A and the 64 is socket 734(I think). Also with an upgraded Mobo you would probably have to get S-ata drives which means replacing your hard drives. If you upgrade your video card you would definately need to upgrade that power supply!I have a ati radeon 9800 pro and it blew up my power supply!Even before it blew up i used to get graphical corruption cos it wasnt drawing enough power.Nice 550 watt works fine for me now You mention your Ram.Do you know what speed your ram is?with 512 DDR@400 I usually have around 300mb free thats on XP pro, with firewall and antivirus as well as a few other proggys in the background. At the moment I would say your pc is Ok and slightly simliar to mine.2000+,128mb radeon 9800pro,512ddr@400,550 watt power supply. It can still run the latest games although not at full whack. If you are set on upgrading I would say the Mobo and processor as your card is adequete, but the a 64 board alone is around £100 and the minimum 64 processor I've seen is around £180(3200+). But Eventually I would recommend a better PSU if you upgrade your video card

WHY??? Well my system just runninfg uses around half the ram, and then just running adaware slows it right down. After playing a game the system is slow too. I firgured that more ram would solve this. The case was just not for the PSU, i meant I wanted a cool case, as at the time I had used most of my budget and just got a cheap looking case. My ram is ddr333 so not as fast as yours Irenicus. My GFX card maybe 128mb, but the 9200SE range is quite old and not futureproof.

Nothing is futureproof. My comp chugs on Doom3 and it should be able to run it at least smoothly on the lowest settings. The highest Processor you could get in your mobo at the moment would be the AMD 2800+ as that is the highest processor for 333FSB. I also just noticed its an 9200SE.I read it wrong first time Sorry So I would recommend that if you really want to upgrade you should start with that. But again I'd check the power requirements on the card as some have seperate power connectors. I think it comes down to your budget really. With a rough estimate I could help a bit more

Golden Dragoon advised me against my graphics card, but it was only £30 so I got it anyway. i surprised him with it's capabilities: I run UT2004 on normal settings and it handles doom 3.

Ok, what would upgrading the processor do performance wise, ie. what does it do?

Upgrading the processor would just speed up your computer.

Speed pretty much everything up. The processor handles everything the computer does, playing games, communicating with peripherals. It should just make the whole machine run a bit faster.

But remember that if you want to upgrade your processor your current board can only handle up to the 2800+ with your current RAM.So a new processor higher than that would involve new 400 RAM then the processor.
I doubt you would notice any real differnece from a 2500+ to a 2800+

I wonder why it's called a processor? Hmm, could it be that it processes things and therefore a faster one could process things faster? I'll be damned if I know.
I have a Radeon 8500dv and a 1800+ (but I have it at 1600 to cut heat down). I run Unreal Tourny with almost every graphical option and get high framerates. Same with Doom 3.
I guess my config skills must help things along, though i'm tempted by a new graphics card to cheer up Battlefield: Vietnam - since it's a sod and crashes with the 8500 for no good reason.

The 8500's have always had problems with BF 1942 and as Vietnam is based on that then I am not surprised, Though the Radeon 9000\9100\9200 that are pretty much the same as the 8500 don't have any problems, Strange isn't it.

Ha. This is actually just the same thing as when my ex-girlfriend asked me how uni was going. "Just because I am one now, doesn't change the fact that all students are tossers."
