we are curently looking at either the Toshiba 36ZP38B a 36" widescreen (Picture Frame 2) as it has gotten fantastic reviews and it suports progresive scan for my Gamecube and is 100hz, Or the Phillips 36PW9607 which has a lot of great feature as well including pixel plus, to replace our old (got it in 2000) 28" widescreen (which I will then put in my computer room and replace our older ('96 ish) 21" tv. I can get both for about £1000 each but I would like to hear what you think of them, to be honest though it looks like we will go for the Toshiba as Sarah thinks it will fit in with the style of the room better (It really looks good is what she said ).

Get a good one! ;D ;D Seriously though, I hate those big plasma ones etc. as they have shite quality, you can see the blockiness! I heard someone in Bennet's say that all size tv's use the same amount of vertical and horizontal lines (I guess they make the pixels) but in a bigger TV they are further spread, so in theory a good old 14" inch one is the best Although if you sit really far away from a big tv its good.

I don't like the plasma ones either thats why both these are CRT. and both these tv's have a much higer resolution than standard sets, the philips one has Pixel plus and the Tosh has something similar (possibly to do with the progressive scan)

Ahh, but Jamie (here's where I geek out) Plasma Tv's ARE fantastic quality - and support resolutions far beyond CRT televisions.
The stumbling block is in fact the source material! Digital TV is appalling quality and even DVD's don't carry enough information to hide artefacts when presented on such a large screen.
The general remedies tend to be the use of a progressive scan DVD player which removes some of the 'big screen' problem. Of course in gaming these artefacts are not present, but in general textures will look low res on all the current consoles.
But I wonder about PC gaming... well for that I can tell you, they are amazing.
p.s. that guy in Bennets sucks and should be sacked on grounds of incompetence. Hey, if I could be everywhere at once then noone else would have a job! (j/k).
Anyway, roll on HDTV is all I can say.

Get the toshiba, it IS the best tube tv out there at the moment - my dad's been looking at it for months and he's an electronic engineer so knows everything there is to know about tv's cameras and picture quality. The plasma ones are not better than the tube sets at the moment despite what anybody says. go the for the toshiba stay well clear of the philips...and even further from the sony wegas their picture quality is ridiculously soft, the sony's that is, the philips arnt too bad, but you want a japanese make - or one of those countries around japan, they make the best electronics and will last the longest too and i wud use the quote button here but i got confused and then couldn't find the exact post when i edited it... but it's in reply to the one about plasma tvs and hd: High Definition TV is scheduled to be broadcast from sky in around 2006 but you'll nead a high definition set anyway.... so very well put about the people in Bennetts - they know NOTHING. Well said. Toshiba
