I'm thinking about jumping ship and leaving Sony behind and going for the xbox360.
I've seen that there's a reliability issue, but the question is- is this just media hype or is there hard evidence?
Xbox360 owners- how reliable has your xbox been?

Nope, red rings still happen, as it is only the cpu on the falcom that is new (65nm) the graphics chip, which was the culprit of all these red rings is still the old 90nm one.
Anyway, from my experience the 360 has terrible reliability, every one I know irl has had at least one fail on them, and I have been through 3 seperate 360's myself. Now don't get me wrong it is a good console, I just wish I didn't have to go through the hasstle of getting microsoft to replace them each time (and creating new gamertags and getting my xbla purchases credited to the new accounts).

The red ring of death isn't just a graphics chip problem -- it happens whenever ANY fault occurs within the console. Apparently a large number of these were attributable to dodgy soldering, which is an issue that could be solved quite easily by increasing the number of whippings given to the Taiwanese children in the Xbox factory. Well that is true, but the vast majority of the RRoD's are attributied to the graphics chip.

Yeah thats right, sometimes its due to the system over heating and melting solder from the GPU and thus f**king up the console to no end, but then again thats what you get when you put the GPU and CPU on top of each other

The least reliable console i ever had was my PS1 which was a launch model which carried a manufacturing fault.
This meant i ended up having to turn the console up on it's side just to get the bugger to work (a look that subsequent consoles seem to have copied).
With all the bad press about the 360's though, i've been kinda wary of playing it for too long a period, so far though, it has been ok (though the fact that i only have 3 games on it probably helps).

Well, my PS2 is still going strong Haven't had a single disc read error or anything like that, and must've had it for about 3 years near. Second generation (old style) one I think.

Had my 360 for nearly 2 years & no probs. (touch wood) And it's modded & I play about 2 hrs a day. At the end of the day I think it's the luck of the draw.

I've had four 360's bout so far the fourth is has been working fine, simply cause it broke and I repaired it. The soldering on the 360 is shockingly bad. Also did you know there are two different versions of the xbox 360 wireless controllers inside 1 you can mod easily the other is a pain

I'm on my euro launchday 360 and never had any trouble with it. I've had more trouble with my wii freezing up while playing a game and my ps3 freezing up while using its browzer, ever since the second last firmware update I got for it. A friend of mine also has a 360, that he bought only a few weeks after I got mine and he also never had any trouble with his. I keep my 360 horizontal, well ventilated and when not in use along with my wii and ps3 covered with a plastic bag.
